6 out of 10 self-employed individuals are considering closing down their businesses due to burdens from fixed expenses such as rent and labor costs.
One in two self-employed individuals in South Korea are 'solopreneurs' who work alone without employees, working an average of 10 hours a day and taking only 2 days off per month. Their satisfaction with their self-employed life was only 2.7 out of 5.
The results of a survey on the 'Self-Employed Business Environment' conducted by Flea Market, the nation's representative job app, targeting 658 self-employed individuals across the country were announced on the 22nd.
According to the survey results, 64% of the self-employed work with family or alone as 'solopreneurs'. In response to the question of whether they currently have employees, 47.7% of respondents answered 'no', and 16.3% answered that they have 'unpaid family workers'. 36% of the self-employed have employees, with the most common number of employees being 1-3 (57%).
Self-employed individuals work an average of 9.8 hours per day. By industry, △those in the accommodation and food service industry worked the longest at 11.5 hours, followed by △retail 10.2 hours, △arts, sports, and leisure-related services 9.7 hours, △transportation 9.5 hours, and △education services and △other personal services at 9.2 hours respectively. Working hours also differed depending on whether or not they had employees. First, those working with family or alone worked 10.3 hours, 0.5 hours longer than the average. On the other hand, those with employees worked 8.9 hours, about 1 hour less than the average.
The average number of days off per month was 1.9. In response to the question of whether they have a regular day off, the most common answer was 'no' at 29%, followed by △twice a month (24.2%), △four times a month (19.8%), △once a month (14.3%), △5 or more times a month (7.1%), and △three times a month (5.6%).
Furthermore, 9 out of 10 self-employed individuals (91.2%) responded that their sales in the first quarter of 2024 were similar to or decreased compared to the same period last year. Only 8.8% said that their sales increased. The average sales decrease was 23.7%, and the industry with the largest decrease in sales was the real estate industry, with an average decrease of 30%.
So, what are the business expenses that self-employed individuals find most burdensome? 28% of respondents cited 'rent' as the top concern. △Labor costs (22.9%) and △various fees and taxes (18.2%) also received high response rates, and there were also responses indicating burdens related to △utilities such as electricity and water (14%), △raw material/material costs (10.5%), △marketing expenses (3.3%), and △loan principal and interest (3%).
In response to the question of whether they had considered suspending or closing down their business in the past year, 64% answered 'yes'. The biggest reason for self-employed individuals to consider suspension or closure was △the burden of fixed expenses such as rent and labor costs (39.4%), followed by △continuous decline in performance (24.5%) and △worsening financial situation (20.4%). This was followed by △uncertain economic recovery prospects (11.9%), △burden of loan repayment (2.9%), and △health reasons (1%).
Meanwhile, satisfaction with life as a self-employed individual was found to be relatively low at 2.7 out of 5. The biggest reason for dissatisfaction with life as a self-employed individual was △unstable income (46.8%), followed by △unstable business environment (15.9%), △high workload (15.2%), and △lack of free time (14%). Other reasons included △lack of development (4.2%), △unsuitability for their aptitude (3.3%), and △negative public perception (0.5%).
