PMGrow has signed an agreement with professors from Gangwon National University, Gyeongnam National University, and Pohang University of Science and Technology, who expressed their intention to participate in this industry-academia collaboration project, to provide electric vehicle battery data free of charge and support its use in research and development.
Through this free provision of battery data, meaningful progress is expected in research on the performance optimization, safety enhancement, and reuse activation of electric vehicle batteries. The research results are expected to contribute not only to various academic materials and paper publications but also to the discovery of related new businesses.
The data that PMGrow provides to universities is operational data and charging/discharging data collected over the past six months through its battery subscription service. This includes all battery history information of electric vehicles, such as battery status, charging history, and vehicle mileage.
This agreement goes beyond the simple provision of data and focuses on laying the foundation for meaningful joint research in electric vehicle battery technology by bringing together academia and industry. Universities can obtain industry-site data that is difficult to secure in laboratories through specialized companies and conduct research and development on various topics, such as battery life prediction R&D, establishment and evaluation of optimal charging/discharging profiles, development of anode active materials and all-solid-state electric technology for high-speed charging/discharging, problems and solutions in the use of secondary battery materials, major charging environments and battery degradation behavior, and battery pack status estimation, thereby achieving results ranging from applied research materials to new concept practical technologies.
The industry believes that if platform services are established in the electric vehicle field for conventional internal combustion engine-verified technology and service companies such as insurance, maintenance, finance, and used cars, they will actively introduce specialized customized services. PMGrow has planned this industry-academia collaboration project with the great intention of acting as a catalyst in creating such a foundational environment.
Jaehong Park, CEO of PMGrow, said, “Because we directly operate the battery subscription service business, we can collect vast amounts of electric vehicle data. Based on the collected big data, we are providing the ‘Wattever’ and ‘Wattproof’ services, which use AI algorithms to predict battery aging and remaining life. We have provided data to universities to contribute to the development of the battery circular economy, and we will continue to expand such collaborative projects to play a leading role in the emergence of new electric vehicle business models and services.”
Sangwoo Kim, a professor at Pohang University of Science and Technology, said, “Until now, it has been impossible to obtain real-world data from battery cell manufacturers or electric vehicle OEM suppliers, making it difficult to utilize it for research. Thanks to PMGrow, we can obtain real-world data, which will be a great help in our research on battery pack capacity degradation and fault estimation according to electric vehicle battery degradation progression.”
Introduction to PMGrow
PMGrow was the first company in Korea to introduce an electric vehicle battery subscription service in 2020. It collects real-time data from various electric vehicles such as electric buses, taxis, and rental cars, accumulating vast amounts of big data. It possesses core technologies for collecting and refining operational data by installing an OBD (On-Board Diagnostic) device in vehicles. It uses its proprietary AI algorithms to analyze this big data, providing accurate information needed to activate electric vehicle platform services, including battery remaining life prediction. The level of measurement and diagnosis technology has reached the stage where the battery status can be certified at 95% ± 2%. This technology has enabled objective value assessment and pricing of electric vehicle batteries in areas such as finance, insurance, maintenance, and used cars, allowing the company to provide electric vehicle-specific platform services.
