Both companies are strengthening their competitiveness in the enterprise language model market through collaboration on collecting low-resource language data and building datasets in the Asian region.

Flitto (CEO Jeong-Su Lee, KOSDAQ 300080), an AI language data company, announced on the 9th that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Upstage, an AI technology company, to build AI language data.

The two companies plan to collaborate on collecting low-resource languages such as Thai, Japanese, Vietnamese, Lao, and Khmer in the Asian region and building datasets to improve the performance of large language models (LLMs).

The agreement includes: △Collaboration on building a benchmark dataset for the Korean large language model leaderboard ‘Ko-LLM’, △Collaboration on operating a multilingual large language model (LLM) leaderboard, △Building low-resource language data and localizing large language models (LLMs) through the use of low-resource languages, and △Strengthening data supply partnerships for building enterprise-adopted small language models (sLLMs). This indicates that the AI development collaboration between the two companies based on language is expected to yield visible results in the future.

Flitto plans to actively contribute to the sophistication of language models through the synergy between language data and AI technology based on this agreement. Furthermore, it aims to enhance its language collection technology competitiveness through its expertise in building multilingual parallel corpora and its text, image, and voice datasets free from copyright issues.

Through this collaboration, Upstage plans to secure high-quality low-resource language data and further expand the supported languages of its pre-trained LLM, ‘Sola’, to develop customized models specialized in various regional languages, including Southeast Asia. Sola currently supports Korean and English, and plans to expand its supported languages to include Japanese and Thai by the end of the year.

Jeong-Su Lee, CEO of Flitto, said, “The field of low-resource language learning has emerged as a key factor in the performance of large language models.” He added, “Through our collaboration, we aim to demonstrate the positive contribution that the combination of high-quality data and sophisticated technology can make to the domestic generative AI ecosystem.”

Sunghoon Kim, CEO of Upstage, said, “As the generative AI boom triggered by language models shakes the world, securing high-quality language data is an essential task.” He continued, “Through this collaboration with Flitto, Upstage will strive to improve data quality so that more people around the world can experience the innovation of generative AI.”
