On Tuesday, October 30th, the ‘STAXX Panorama’, an achievement sharing event, was held to share the achievements of the past three years and propose future directions for the growth of the local startup ecosystem in the Gyeongbuk region. This event was the result of diverse collaborations between the Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, Yeongju City, SK Specialty, Impact Square, and social ventures, representing a leading regional revitalization program in Korea, known as the ‘STAXX Project’.
Held at the Hanum Music Hall in Seonbiseong, Yeongju City, Gyeongbuk, the ‘STAXX Panorama’ featured the ‘STAXX Omnibus’, a demo day for 10 participating companies; the ‘STAXX Highlight’, an achievement report that shared the economic and social value created by the project over the past three years; and the exhibition ‘Stack, Credit’, which showcased the stories of individuals involved in the project.
The demo day (STAXX Omnibus) featured presentations by a total of 10 companies that participated in the project: △Decant △Liquor Square △Byroot △Backpackers Planet △Blank △Vines △Elground △Pinogen △Picky Child Company △Korea Fisheries Technology Institute (KOF). Each company presented their achievements and future business growth potential. Unlike typical demo days, this event drew attention by considering the values and characteristics of each company, categorizing them as either ‘Scale Deep’, focusing on regional-rooted growth, or ‘Scale Up’, aiming for rapid scale expansion, during both the presentations and the judging process. Following the presentations, six judges selected Pinogen (CEO Shinbyeol) as the outstanding company in the Scale Deep category and the Korea Fisheries Technology Institute (KOF) in the Scale Up category.
The achievement report, ‘STAXX Highlight’, shared experiences and outcomes from the past three years. To foster the sharing of experiences among diverse stakeholders, representatives from participating companies, Yeongju City, and SK Specialty took to the stage for a talk concert. At the end of the program, awards were presented to acknowledge those who contributed to the project’s success. SK Specialty received the Gyeongbuk Governor’s Award, and Impact Square received the Yeongju Mayor’s Award.
During a brief vision speech, Hyunmyeong Doh, CEO of Impact Square, stated, “Many still question why we continue with difficult local projects. Our simple answer is that we believe there is potential here, and it’s something that can be achieved. Just as these 10 companies have shown the beginning of that potential, we will continue to support the emergence of more entrepreneurs who will shape Yeongju’s dynamics.”
‘Stack, Credit’ was an exhibition that conveyed the value of the ‘community’ that the STAXX project is creating in Gyeongbuk Yeongju, earning positive responses from attendees. The exhibition was designed to showcase the STAXX project’s insight that a sustainable work and startup environment requires the coexistence of diverse lifestyles within a region and the ability of these lifestyles to support individual lives.
Kyewoo Lee, President of SK Specialty, who was involved in this project, commented, “The trust-based collaboration between businesses and local governments has yielded the initial seeds of meaningful change in Yeongju. We will strive to make STAXX a leading regional revitalization program in Korea that addresses local pain points and explores paths to mutual prosperity.”
The STAXX Project was conceived to identify and accelerate promising companies that could serve as role models for region-based entrepreneurs, thereby establishing successful growth examples. The project focused on attracting 10 companies with high growth potential to Gyeongbuk Yeongju and connecting them closely with regional resources to establish sustainable business models. Furthermore, the project supported the growth of approximately 340 local entrepreneurs through the operation of 12 lectures and practical programs for aspiring and early-stage entrepreneurs in the region. Leveraging various partnerships with Seoul’s ‘Next Local’ and the Korea Tourism Organization’s sustainable travel pilot project ‘Better:里’, the project aimed to expand the agenda of activating Yeongju’s startup ecosystem. The STAXX Project team expressed their gratitude and requested continued interest and support for future programs that utilize this experience and expertise.
