Keynote Lecture and Book Talk by President Kwang Hyung Lee, the Godfather of Futurology, on his book ‘The Origin of the Future’
Discussion on future insights and implications for startups between President Lee, who nurtured the first generation of domestic venture businesses, and KAIST startup alumni leading the startup ecosystem.
Agreed to jointly strive to revitalize startups through close collaboration between the university and alumni.
KAIST One Club (KOC), an alumni association fostering the startup ecosystem composed of KAIST alumni (President Jaejung Kwon), invited President Kwang Hyung Lee of KAIST to deliver a keynote lecture and book talk on ‘The Origin of the Future’ at Gangnam Startup Hub Center in Yeoksam-dong, Seoul on May 16th.
This lecture was designed to enhance the entrepreneurial insights of alumni by providing a macroscopic perspective on securing business opportunities and improving customer value through President Lee's book ‘The Origin of the Future’, published this year. President Lee, a pioneer in domestic futurology and a ‘venture startup godfather’ who has fostered a large number of the first generation of venture entrepreneurs at KAIST, provided a platform for exploring the future based on the contents of the book, which examines the history of the universe and humankind.
At the lecture attended by about 70 KAIST startup alumni, President Kwang Hyung Lee emphasized that ‘history unfolds through the interaction between environment (tools) and humans (ideas). By understanding the fundamental principles of this historical development, we can anticipate a considerable portion of the future.’ He continued, ‘Humanity will continue to create future societies through adaptation of ideas and systems in response to environmental changes.’ He also urged, ‘Since startups are a key means of connecting and developing the tools and ideas needed for future society, let us create the future together by further strengthening collaboration between KAIST and alumni to advance the startup ecosystem.’
Meanwhile, during his time as a professor at the Department of Computer Science at KAIST in the 1990s, President Lee nurtured the first generation of domestic venture entrepreneurs, including Jung-Ju Kim (Nexon), Young-Dal Kim (IDIS), Seung-Woo Shin (Neowiz), and Jun-Hwan Kim (Olaworks). Since his inauguration as president in 2021, he has been promoting ‘One Lab, One Startup’ as a practical strategy. This initiative aims to foster technology-based startups by improving internal systems, securing investments, and enhancing capabilities for faculty, students, and researchers who aspire to launch startups.
Furthermore, KAIST has introduced a new system to support startup teams of graduates this year. To achieve this, KAIST actively promotes synergy creation among students, faculty, and alumni through investment support from KAIST Youth Startup Investment Holdings, collaboration with the KAIST Alumni Association and the alumni startup ecosystem, KOC, etc.
President Jaejung Kwon of KOC stated, ‘Through President Kwang Hyung Lee's lecture for startup alumni, we will foster closer collaboration between the university and alumni to support the success of student, faculty, and alumni startup teams, and build KOC into an organization that contributes to the growth of Korea's startup ecosystem.’
Introduction of KOC Partners
KOC (KAIST One Club) is a startup ecosystem community established by KAIST startup alumni on November 7, 2019. It consists primarily of KAIST students, alumni, and faculty. It facilitates active exchanges among approximately 1,260 individuals, including entrepreneurs, investors from VC, AC, and corporate CVCs, industry experts such as patent attorneys and accountants, and startup support organization personnel. In addition to IR sessions for member companies, KOC operates 16 industry-specific divisions (Pet Business, Technology Real Estate, Bio Healthcare, AI, Edutech, Culture & Arts, Sustainable Green, Blockchain, Evergreen Senior, Finance, Mobility, Parts & Materials, ICT, Children & Youth, Content, CEO Forum) as an open organization that welcomes non-KAIST alumni. Through this, it fosters synergy creation through voluntary collaboration and networking within the startup ecosystem. KOC works closely with KAIST by co-hosting startup programs such as the ‘KAIST Startup Award’, collaborating on investment attraction for promising student startup companies, and providing mentorship. Externally, it supports the growth of promising tech startups, including KAIST alumni companies, through open innovation with large and medium-sized enterprises. KOC plans to become a foundation by the fourth quarter of this year to further systematize its startup ecosystem activities.
