LG Electronics, Hyundai Motor Company, PopcornSAR, and AWS to Host 'Embedded Software Competition' Starting May 2
The 22nd Embedded Software Competition, hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and organized by the Korea Embedded Software & System Industry Association (KESSIA), has embarked on a 7-month journey, starting with the competition announcement on May 2.
Sponsored by LG Electronics, Hyundai Motor Company, PopcornSAR, AWS, Hanwha Vision, MDS Tech, and Supertrack, this year's Embedded Software Competition will be held in a total of 9 categories. Notably, the addition of two new competition categories – Autonomous Racing and Manipulated Humanoid – is expected to broaden the appeal of embedded software and offer a diverse range of attractions for viewers.
The exhibition categories include △Open Competition, △webOS, △Automotive/Mobility, △Industry-Academia Project, △Maker Heroes, and △Teen Startup. The competition categories will feature △Intelligent Humanoid, △Manipulated Humanoid, and △Autonomous Racing.
LG Electronics, sponsoring the webOS category, will provide equipment and technical support training. Hyundai Motor Company, sponsoring the Automotive/Mobility category, will continue its support by providing 2 million won in equipment purchase funds, as it did last year. The Best, Excellent, and Encouragement awards in each category will be presented as the LG Electronics CTO Award and the Hyundai Motor Company President Award, respectively.
The newly established Autonomous Racing category is sponsored by PopcornSAR, and AWS's participation will facilitate an AWS DeepRacer competition using Adaptive AUTOSAR solutions. Notably, finalist teams in this category will receive free AUTOSAR training worth 3.5 million won per person, which is expected to be a significant benefit for college students and job seekers looking to enter the industry.
Hanwha Vision will participate as a sponsor in the Open Competition category, selecting one outstanding team to receive the Hanwha Vision Future Technology Award.
The Junior category is divided into ‘Maker Heroes (Elementary & Middle School)’ and ‘Teen Startup (Middle & High School)’ for evaluation. Among these, one team will be selected for the Grand Prize, and one team will be selected for the Best, Excellent, and Encouragement awards in each category. Notably, for Maker Heroes, Supertrack will provide ‘mBot 2’ as a prize for all winning teams except for those receiving Honorable Mentions.
The Intelligent Humanoid category will involve a bipedal humanoid golf competition. This year, a new Manipulated Humanoid category has been established to encourage participation from elementary, middle, and high school students, with the aim of fostering interest in robot operation.
Furthermore, the Industry-Academia Project category, which selects outstanding projects conducted by students participating in the ‘New Industry Convergence Embedded System Specialized Human Resource Development Project’* in collaboration with consortium companies, is scheduled for presentation and exhibition in November.
- A specialized human resource development project (2021-2026) for embedded SW professionals at the master's level or higher, linked to related companies in key industry sectors (intelligent information systems, smart mobility, next-generation aerospace).
KESSIA Team Leader Choi Jin-hyeok stated, “With the expansion of new sponsors and the establishment of new categories, we anticipate a wide range of participation from talented developers in various fields and subjects. We, the secretariat, will actively strive to provide an opportunity for all participants, including elementary, middle, and high school students, to develop an interest in embedded software development and cultivate creative problem-solving skills through this competition.”
Applications for the webOS, Automotive/Mobility, Maker Heroes, Intelligent Humanoid, and Autonomous Racing categories, which will receive equipment support, will close on June 7 (Fri). Applications for the Open Competition, Teen Startup, and Manipulated Humanoid categories will be accepted until September 5 (Thu). The Industry-Academia Project category will be conducted separately.
Teams that advance to the finals in the webOS, Automotive/Mobility, Maker Heroes, Intelligent Humanoid, and Autonomous Racing categories, which receive equipment support, must participate in technical support training following the preliminary judging.
Following the preliminary judging in each category, the selected finalist teams will undergo presentation and competition judging in November. The winning teams will showcase their works and attend the award ceremony at the ‘2024 Korea Industrial Technology R&D Expo’ in November.
At the 22nd Embedded Software Competition, the Grand Prize winners in the General and Junior categories, as well as the Best Award winners in the Open Competition and Industry-Academia Project categories, will receive the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Award. In addition to the Creativity Award, a special award from Sejong University, a total of 64 teams will be awarded prizes, with a total prize money of 42.7 million won.
