The ‘2024 Korea-Japan Parts, Materials, and Equipment Partnering Plaza’ will be held in Osaka for two days, starting on the 24th.
Hosted in collaboration with relevant organizations, including Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and local governments, the event will see the participation of 47 South Korean companies in the power, parts, materials, and equipment sectors.
Following the resumption of the summit shuttle diplomacy, bilateral economic cooperation in the new energy sector is further expanding.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) and KOTRA (President Yu Jeong-yeol) jointly held the ‘2024 Korea-Japan Parts, Materials, and Equipment Partnering Plaza’ in Osaka, Japan, from April 24th to 25th. This event was organized to translate the achievements of the summit shuttle diplomacy, which resumed last year, into expanded economic cooperation and tangible exports.
Designed to support South Korean companies’ entry into Japan’s power, energy, and parts, materials, and equipment value chains, this event brought together approximately 47 promising export-oriented companies in the related fields. The event comprised three main components: △a seminar on strategies for entering the Japanese decarbonization market, △industry-specific export consultations, and △a Korea-Japan business partnering consultation session. Notably, this year’s event involved collaboration with power generation companies, including Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), Korea South-East Power Co., Ltd., Korea Western Power Co., Ltd., as well as local governments such as Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and Dong-gu District in Incheon, to maximize the event’s outcomes.
The ‘Japan Decarbonization Market Entry Strategy Seminar,’ held on the 24th, featured a presentation by a local energy industry expert on Japan’s carbon neutrality status and future challenges. Furthermore, a procurement official from Kawasaki Heavy Industries, a global corporation, was invited to introduce projects for building a green energy supply chain.
Subsequently, on the 25th, industry-specific export consultations covering power, energy, and parts, materials, and equipment were held, attracting over 80 buyer companies and facilitating approximately 250 consultations. Notably, a significant number of major Japanese power companies, including JERA (Japan’s largest power company), Kansai Electric Power Co., and primary vendors, as well as major steel and plant companies such as JFE Engineering, participated, demonstrating considerable interest in South Korean products. A dedicated promising power buyer booth was established within the consultation area, where procurement officials from power companies engaged directly with South Korean businesses to discuss procurement items and potential collaboration avenues.
Dong-in Engineering, a partner company of Korea South-East Power Co., Ltd., leveraged this event to formally commence work on a thermal insulation replacement project for a large-scale local steel mill. This achievement is a testament to the superior quality of their easily detachable and reusable thermal insulation materials. Dong-in Engineering also signed a tripartite business agreement worth US$1.5 million with Company K, a major Japanese steel company, and vendor Y at the site.
In addition, on the 25th, KOTRA co-hosted a ‘Korea-Japan Business Partnering Consultation Session’ with the Osaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, a leading economic organization in the Kansai region. POSCO International Japan and other South Korean major company branches in Japan participated to identify local supply sources. This inaugural initiative of bidirectional import and export consultations is anticipated to serve as a catalyst for strengthening business ties between the two countries.
The Japanese government and industry are actively seeking global partners to address challenges such as green transitions and securing stable raw material supplies. South Korea, with its competitive pricing and quick response capabilities, is a reliable source of supply, and local demand for South Korean businesses is expected to persist for some time. Infrastructure projects related to increasing renewable energy sources, building next-generation power grids, and upgrading aging power plants are particularly promising areas for South Korean companies and warrant attention.
Jeong Oe-yeong, Head of KOTRA’s Innovation Growth Headquarters, commented, “Japan, which ranked 5th among South Korea’s power equipment export destinations last year, will remain a crucial market for our companies. We will strive to solidify bilateral cooperation by capitalizing on changes across Japanese industries, such as decarbonization and renewable energy transitions, and provide comprehensive support measures.”
