‘Money20/20’, a leading global fintech expo and a stage for financial business, concluded its three-day schedule from April 23rd to 25th at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC) in Bangkok, Thailand. The event featured fintech-related discussions, networking opportunities, and impactful industry nights, driving innovation within the industry.

The first-ever ‘Money20/20 Asia’ event brought together over 3,000 attendees and more than 200 media representatives. Participants came from 87 countries, including 24 in the Asia-Pacific region. Over 250 key industry speakers from across Asia delivered impactful discussions across four sessions. Of these speakers, 45% were women executives and fintech leaders, and over 60% were C-suite executives.

Tracey Davies, Global Chairman of Money20/20, stated, “Money20/20 Asia is the gathering place for the world’s fintech leaders to grow their businesses. It was truly inspiring to see key figures from banks, payment companies, venture firms, startups, regulators, and media platforms converge in Bangkok. The discussions, deals, and global announcements that took place at the event demonstrate Asia’s immense standing as a driver of global growth within the fintech industry. We are excited to see how this remarkable ecosystem will evolve by 2025 in Bangkok.”

This year’s event focused on key topics such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), cross-border payments, open banking, digital assets, Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs), and financial inclusion. Notably, KASIKORNBANK (KBank), one of Thailand’s largest commercial banks, announced a key partnership with J.P. Morgan at the Money20/20 Asia media luncheon on April 23rd. This joint initiative, ‘Project Carina’, leverages decentralized blockchain and Web3 technologies to significantly reduce cross-border payment processing times from the traditional 72 hours to just 5 minutes.

Key regulators across the Asia-Pacific region were active participants in the discussions. Out of 189 sessions, 20 featured Asian regulatory bodies or fintech/financial institutions explaining the latest trends and impacts of regulatory technology.

A session led by Dr. Wong Huei Ching of the Securities Commission Malaysia explored the evolution of fintech within Malaysia’s capital markets. The session particularly focused on finding ways to promote innovation while ensuring investor protection.

Dr. Wong shared, “Malaysia is open for business. Our 14 principles encapsulate a core approach to innovation. From the outset, we recognized the importance of synergy that can be created when citizens, the government, and industry players work together, adopting a collaborative attitude. We believe in going beyond mere technological advancement and leveraging technology to achieve goals such as democratizing financial services or pursuing higher social objectives.”

Core topics like security, mobile ID, and fraud prevention, crucial in the AI era, were discussed across several sessions throughout the event.

Justin Lie, Founder and CEO of SHIELD, highlighted the importance of trust and multilateral collaboration in combating fraud in the digital age during his session titled ‘Trust Tech, Empower Lives: Redefining Financial Inclusion in the AI Age’. SHIELD also co-hosted the ‘Trust Summit’ with Money20/20 Asia, sharing a common goal of fraud prevention.

Justin Lie explained, “Having dedicated over 15 years to fraud prevention, I’ve realized the critical role of trust every day. However, it took us a long time to recognize that we need to pursue a mission beyond simple fraud prevention. SHIELD acts as a catalyst in fostering a stronger bond among industry leaders for a shared goal of fraud prevention for B2B businesses, and this realization led us to host the Trust Summit.”

Following the successful conclusion of the inaugural event in Bangkok, Money20/20 will host its second conference at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in April 2025.
