A new international standard designed to help organizations manage AI safely

Building trust through safeguards to help organizations and society benefit from the opportunities of AI

BSI (British Standards Institution) has launched the first-ever AI management guidance designed to enable the safe, secure, and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) across society.

This international standard (BS ISO/IEC 42001) aims to help organizations use AI responsibly by addressing considerations such as opaque automated decision-making, the use of machine learning instead of human-coded logic in system design, and continuous learning.

Issued in the UK by BSI, the UK's national standards body, the guidance focuses on safeguards and provides a framework for establishing, implementing, maintaining, and continually improving AI management systems. It is impact-based, providing requirements that facilitate context-based AI risk assessment and details on handling and controlling risks for internal and external AI products and services. It also aims to support organizations in taking a responsible role in designing, developing, and delivering AI-powered products and services that benefit them and society as a whole, by embedding a quality-focused culture. The guidance is highlighted as a key step towards the guardrails for safe, ethical, and responsible use of AI in the UK Government's National AI Strategy.

“AI is a transformative technology. For AI to have a positive impact, trust is essential,” said Susan Taylor Martin, CEO, BSI. “The launch of this first international standard for AI management systems is a crucial step in empowering organizations to manage the technology responsibly and provides the opportunity to leverage AI to accelerate progress towards a better future and a sustainable world. BSI is proud to be at the forefront of ensuring the safe and trustworthy integration of AI across society.”

According to a recent BSI survey of 10,000 adults across nine countries on trust in AI, globally – and in the UK (62%) – three in five people want international guidelines for the safe use of AI. Globally, around two in five (38%) already use AI daily in their jobs, and more than two in three (62%) anticipate using it within their industry by 2030. The survey confirmed that closing the ‘AI trust gap’ and building trust in the technology plays a critical role in strengthening the benefits of AI for society and the planet.

“AI technology is widely used by organizations across the UK, despite the absence of an established regulatory framework. While government considers the most effective ways to regulate, people everywhere are calling for guidelines and safeguards to protect themselves,” said Scott Steedman, Director of Standards, BSI. “In this rapidly evolving field, BSI is pleased to release this latest international industry guidance on the use of AI technology, which aims to support businesses in incorporating safe and responsible AI use into their products and services.”

BSI contributed to the development of the guidance as a participating member of ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 42. This year, BSI Korea plans to launch an ISO 42001 training course. Please refer to the BSI blog for details on the schedule and curriculum.

About BSI

BSI (British Standards Institution) was founded in 1901 as the world's first national standards body and has been at the forefront of standardization work ever since. It creates around 3,000 standards each year and withdraws over 1,000, helping to ensure that the core of consistent knowledge across all sectors of industry is maintained through a single type of standard. In addition to working to establish widely agreed-upon benchmarks through standards, BSI also works on certification and training programs for international standards in order to promote them as best practices worldwide. It also makes standards themselves more accessible through a variety of methods, such as online libraries, to help people internalize many best practices.
